Corpus Christi Procession - 3 June

18/5/2018

For the first time in many years, we shall be holding a Corpus Christ Procession on the day of this great Solemnity, Sunday 3 June 2018.

We shall meet at the entrance to Norbury Park, outside the old police station, ready to set off at 14:00. We intend to walk up the pathway towards Harefield Road, where we shall hold Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Please do try to come along and take part in this wonderful, public demonstration of and witness to our Catholic Faith.

Free parking is usually available in the nearby car park off Granville Gardens. The usual 16:00 Benediction in the church itself will be cancelled to allow for this procession to take place.

The Ascension - 10 May Holy Day of Obligation

6/5/2018

Masses will be at 07:30, 10:00 and 20:00

The next Confirmation Session…..

23/4/2018

….. will take place on Wednesday 2 May 2018 (not Wednesday 25 April as stated in the newsletter). All those who attended the Rite of Election Mass have already been informed.

Vocations Sunday - 22 April 2018

21/4/2018

Sunday 22 April is the World Day of Vocations.  A vocation to the priesthood, diaconate or religious life is one of listening and careful discernment. The calling may come suddenly in a moment of great clarity and certainty but more often that not develops gradually over a period of time. As the Pope explains in his Vocations Day Message for 2018:

'The Lord continues to call others to live with him and to follow him in a relationship of particular closeness. He continues to call others to serve him directly. If he lets us realize that he is calling us to consecrate ourselves totally to his kingdom, then we should have no fear! It is beautiful – and a great grace – to be completely and forever consecrated to God and the service of our brothers and sisters.'

If you feel you may have a calling to priesthood, diaconate or relgious life and would like to discuss or explore the matter, please talk to your priest in the first instance.  Alternatively, please speak to a member of the Vocations Team through Fr John Diver, Diocesan Director of Vocations, on 020 8300 2480, or email him.
We ask all Southwark parishioners to pray for vocations and for those discerning their vocation throughout the year, but especially this weekend.
Prayer for Vocations

God our Father, you made each of us
to use our gifts in the Body of Christ.

We ask that You inspire people
who you call to priesthood and consecrated life
to courageously follow Your will.

Send workers into Your great harvest
so that the Gospel is preached,
the poor are served with love,
the suffering are comforted,
and Your people are strengthened by the sacraments.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen

Come and sing at St. Bart's!

Our Polyphony Choir is inviting people who might be wondering how easy or difficult it is to sing in our choir to come and find out!

Each Tuesday until July they will be learning an easy new Mass setting for the first half hour or so of our practices. Why not go along and give it a try? It’s a great way of participating more fully in parish life, a really rewarding interest to have, and a lovely way of making new friends in a very happy parish group.

No commitment is required whatsoever – just dip in and out as you are able to, and decide for yourself.

Find out more about the choir HERE, and please don’t hesitate to contact us to find out more. They will be delighted to see you!

Just turn up; use the side door in Ellison Road.

29 April - Rosary on the Coast

13/4/2018

Rosary on the Coast takes place around the country on Saturday 29 April 2018. This is an initiative to pray for the revitalisation of the Catholic faith, and that all might foster respect for all human life from conception until natural death. If you are interested in finding out more, and perhaps going along to one of the events, please see the Rosary on the Coast Web site.

Gift Aid Notice

4/4/2018

We have discovered that some parishioners give regularly both by Standing Order AND weekly envelopes. If you fall into this category, and have not yet been contacted, please get in touch with the Parish Office. This may affect you if you have received a set of second collection envelopes only, and then discovered that the box you were also expecting to collect is not there for you. For anybody affected, we shall need to give you a fresh number, so that your Standing Order and your envelopes bear the same number. It is not possible to have more than one number per donor. We believe this only affects a very small number of you, given that only two people have so far come forward. Many thanks.

A highly important notice from Father Deo:                                                  New General Data Protection Legislation

28/3/2018

New General Data Protection Legislation comes into force on Friday 25 May 2018. This will affect us all. We are now required to both ensure and indeed demonstrate that we know everybody who has access to the vast amount of personal information we hold in the parish, what information they hold, and in which format/s. I know that a great number of you currently volunteer for the parish, or may have done so in the past, and therefore you may well have some personal information at your home or office, in a file and/or on a PC, phone, laptop or other device.

Please could you let either me or the Parish Office know if this applies to you, so that I can let you know what actions you will need to take going forward. The Archbishop is encouraging all of us to help implement these changes, and I thank you in advance for your co-operation. I cannot stress strongly enough the important impact which this new legislation will have upon the parish, and I am mindful of the most severe penalties which may be imposed for non-compliance. Please therefore do come forward, whether or not you think you may be affected.

Good Friday collection for the Holy Places

26/3/2018

On Good Friday, there will be the traditional collection taken in support of the Holy Places in the Holy Land.  Please note that there is NOT a Gift Aid envelope for this purpose.  Please be as generous as possible in your support for the upkeep of those places associated with the life, death, Passion and Resurrection of our Blessed Lord round and about Jerusalem

Lenten Day of Penitence - Tuesday 27 March

23/3/2018

Mass at 10:00 will be followed by Confessions, which will be available throughout the day, and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until Benediction at 19:00.

Please note that there will be no Confessions on Saturday 31 March.

British Summer Time

19/3/2018

This begins in the early hours of Palm Sunday, 25 March 2018. Please remember to put all your clocks, watches and various gadgets FORWARD ONE HOUR, to avoid coming to Mass an hour late!

Gift Aid

19/3/2018

Our Money Sunday talk was cancelled last Sunday due to the low numbers following the inclement weather. This will now most likely take place shortly after Easter Sunday. In the meantime, please do come along to collect your new set of envelopes, including those of you who give by Standing Order.

Anybody who wishes to receive an end-of-year letter is asked to contact the Parish Office by means of our Contact Form or by email, 'phone or in person at the parish office.

Money Sunday 17/18 March 2018

16/3/2018

This weekend, Our Gift Aid Organiser will speak briefly at all Masses. New envelopes are now available for collection in the room behind Our Lady’s Altar. There are special smaller sets of envelopes for those who give by Standing Order, so that they may take part in Second Collections. Anybody who requires an End of Year letter should email the parish office. You may contact the parish office using the Contact Form on this web site, or else send an email. If you are interested in joining the Gift Aid scheme, at no extra cost to yourself, please ask for details and forms. If you give by Standing Order, and would like to review your payments, this might be a good time to do so. Thank you all for your generosity towards the work of the Church.

Reconciliation for First Holy Communicants 20 March 19:00

16/3/2018

The Reconciliation Service, followed by First Confessions, will take place this Tuesday 20 March 2018 at 19:00 in the Church. Please ensure children arrive in good time. Parents and guardians are asked to wait silently and prayerfully in the Retro Chapel, or as otherwise directed. We expect to be in the church for about an hour.

Palm Sunday Stations of The Cross

16/3/2018

The Polyphony Choir will be joining us at 16:00 on Palm Sunday for Stations of The Cross. Do come along, particularly if you have not been able to make it to Stations at other times during Lent. Pray the Stations of the Cross by St Alphonsus Ligouri, and sing the beautiful verses of the Stabat Mater. Immerse yourself in the journey Christ made from his condemnation to death by Pilate, to his crucifixion, death and entombment. Imagine yourself in the crowd that watched Jesus, and wonder what it must have been like to witness his journey to Calvary.

Important news regarding a SPUC meeting

7/3/2018

Picture
Following the most informative presentation last weekend from John Smeaton, Chief Executive of the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, and the great interest shown in what he had to impart to us, John will be returning to hold a meeting this coming Wednesday 14 March 2018 at 19:30 in the lower hall.

It is proposed to re-establish a SPUC group in our parish. All those who are interested are invited to attend. The meeting is expected to last for a period of between one hour and ninety minutes. John will be able to expand upon what he told us during Masses, provide appropriate literature and keep us up to date on the many attacks upon the sanctity of human life which take place on a daily basis.

Let us embrace the Culture of Life and reject what Pope St John Paul II called the Culture of Death, which seeks to undermine the value of human life at every opportunity.

Parish Safeguarding Policy - updated

5/3/2018

Our Parish Safeguarding Policy has been updated. The revised wording may be found here. It is important that all parishioners, group leaders and volunteers at St. Bartholomew's are fully aware of all aspects of this most important matter.

Weather warning for Confirmation and First Holy Communion candidates

2/3/2018

Due to the inclement weather, it may be necessary to cancel First Holy Communion and Confirmation sessions. Unless you hear otherwise, they will go ahead as planned. You will be contacted by the organisers should cancellation be necessary.

If you are concerned about any parish group meetings, kindly contact the relevant organisers, since meetings may be cancelled and rearranged on an ad hoc basis
