We regret that tonight's First Reconciliation Service for our First Holy Communion Candidates has been cancelled due to the poor weather conditions.
A wonderful tribute to Our Lady, through whom we are encouraged to approach Jesus, (to Jesus through Mary) was held here last Saturday.
The next nearest Day with Mary takes place at St. John Fisher RC Church, Merton, on Saturday
17 March 2018, which is also St Patrick’s Day. Full details are to be found on the poster in the porch. During the Season of Lent there will be Stations of the Cross at St. Bartholomew's on Sundays at 16:00 (followed by Benediction) and on Fridays at 19:30. Please note 12:00 (Children's) & 20:00 on Good Friday.
Both of these roads are now ONE WAY. Hepworth Road is now One Way DOWNWARDS from Streatham High Road to Ellison Road, whilst Glencairn Road is now One Way UPWARDS from Ellison Road to Streatham High Road. The small section of Glencairn Road between Ellison Road and Sherwood Avenue (where the railway bridge crosses) is not affected.
Please be prepared for this new system, which may well cause some congestion around the Church as people get used to it. There is also a danger that some motorists will drive at speed. Please look out for any children, senior citizens and other vulnerable people who will be unprepared for this. NB: pedal cycles may still travel in each direction on both roads. Please also take extra care as there are some vehicles which are still facing in what has now become the wrong direction in both these roads. It is still possible that you may encounter another vehicle coming towards you. ![]() On the weekend of 11 February 2018, there will be a second collection for the Poor Parishes of the diocese. Would all those who Gift Aid their offerings kindly note that the blue envelope in your boxes bears the incorrect date of 25 February. Please retrieve the envelope for 25 February, marked “Poor Parishes” and change the date on it. As ever, if you give by Standing Order, your payment to this and indeed any second collections may only be Gift Aided if you use one of the same envelopes, since Standing Orders do not cover such collections. A large number of boxes remain uncollected. The Polyphony Choir is looking for an organist to accompany them for the Masses and Services they sing at, and for the last two Tuesday evening practices each month. This opportunity may suit a grade 7-8 pianist wishing to extend their keyboard abilities to the pipe organ. Sight-reading skills a huge advantage.
The Choir's Web site may be found here, together with details of the instrument. A monthly stipend is available, negotiable according to ability. Please contact Tony Price by email or by 'phone 020 8647 4435 for more details ![]() The Bishops of England and Wales, mindful of the Eucharistic Pilgrimage and Congress which is due to take place in Liverpool in September this year, have decided to develop the practice of Eucharistic Adoration across the country. As a result of this initiative, our own Archdiocese of Southwark is putting together a Diocesan Adoration Lay Team in order to promote, expand and consolidate Eucharistic Adoration across the See of Southwark. You are therefore invited to attend a Special Information Meeting at the Centre for Catholic Formation at 21 Tooting Bec Road, SW17 8BS on Saturday 3 February 2018 at 11:00 through to 12:15, with registration from 10:00. Refreshments will be served. If you would like to attend this event, please inform the parish office no later than Wednesday 24 January 2018, as numbers must be given soon after that date. Please see the posters in the porch which contain the necessary information regarding this splendid initiative. We are most fortunate in this parish to have daily adoration before 10:00 Mass, weekly adoration and Benediction on Sundays, as well as a whole day each Advent and Lent, when we hold our Days of Penitence. It is hoped that such practices will spread across the archdiocese, so that the faithful might have greater access to the Real Presence of Christ, the Bread of Life, placed in the Monstrance upon the altar. The Prayer for the Church in Southwark, associated with September's Eucharistic Pilgrimage & Conference, Adoremus, which takes place in Liverpool in September this year may be found HERE. Please be aware that, due to a special event for our First Holy Communion candidates, there will be no Confessions after the 10:00 Mass. Confessions will be heard as usual from 17:00 to 18:00.
First Holy Communion Masses for 2018 have now been allocated. The list is posted on the notice board in the main porch. Please note the date allocated to your child. Please check carefully the spelling of names. If any amendments are required, please let the parish office know.
There will be a very important meeting for all parents at 20:00 on Tuesday 9 January in the lower hall. At this meeting, vital information will be given to you. A reminder to all potential Confirmation candidates that their application forms should be returned to the Parish Office no later than Sunday 7 January.
Parents, guardians and candidates are reminded of the Introductory Meeting to be held in the lower hall on Wednesday 17 January 2018 at 19:30. Bishop Patrick Lynch will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation on Pentecost Sunday, 20 May 2018, at 12:00. Father Deo, Father Innocent, Deacon Ged and the entire Parish Team hope and pray that you will have a wonderfully holy and happy Christmas and that the New Year will be full of all the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.
This year, your offerings at the Crib will go to the Southwark Crisis Fund which was launched in November 2015 by the Westminster Catholic Children's Society and Archbishop Peter Smith. The Fund provides one-off grants to support families living in our Southwark Archdiocese where a relatively small amount of funding can make a big difference. As Catholics we have an Obligation to attend Mass on Sundays AND on Holy Days of Obligation (of which Christmas is one). The options that will fulfil your Obligations at St. Bartholomew’s are:
Saturday evening Mass of Anticipation at 18:15 OR one of the Sunday morning Masses at 08:30, 10:00 or 11:30 (there is no Sunday evening Mass) AND Sunday’s Christmas Vigil Mass at 18:00 OR Midnight Mass at 23:30 OR one of Monday’s Christmas Day Masses at 08:30, 10:00 or 11:30 After 10:00 Mass Confessions will be available all day until Benediction at 19:00. A wonderful opportunity to prepare for Christmas.
Do you support Catholic schools, and the right of Catholics to send their children to those schools?
Archbishop Peter Smith writes: “We need you to make your voice heard. The government is making a critical decision on whether to overturn the admissions cap which prevents Catholic schools from allowing all Catholic pupils to attend. This cap was introduced by the Coalition Government in 2010. The present Government have acknowledged that this policy discriminates against Catholics and indeed they promised to abandon it. Now we most urgently need you to tell them that they must not perform a U-turn on that public promise they made to Catholics. Please visit Catholic Education. There you will be able to write to the Government and urge them to drop their policy which bans new Catholic Schools. If you do not have access to a computer, please write to: The Secretary of State for Education The Right Hon. Justine Greening MP Sanctuary Buildings 20 Great Smith Street Westminster, London SW1P 3BT Thankyou.” In addition to the many books, diaries, calendars and devotional items which are always held, the repository is now fully stocked for Christmas, including cards, calendars, diaries, nativity scenes etc. Demand is always very high. So as to avoid disappointment, please don’t delay your purchases until the last minute. When it’s gone, it’s gone!!
For more information pick up a leaflet from Church, visit the Legacy page on the Diocesan Web site, or email Adrian Radford, the Diocesan Financial Controller.
This event is to be held on Saturday 11 November at Bishop Thomas Grant School. The day will be led by Fr. Denis McBride CSsR. Registration from 10:30, with a 11:00 start, concluding with Mass at 15:00 celebrated by Bishop Pat Lynch. Please contact the parish office ASAP if you would like to attend
