Eileen Cecilia McCarthy RIP

12/2/2019

Eileen Cecilia McCarthy
“Eily”
11 July 1930 – 7 February 2019

It is with great sadness that we have to inform you that Eileen has passed away
following an illness of several months.  She died in Croydon University Hospital.
For those of you who would like to attend her funeral, the details are below.

Venue
St Bartholomew’s Catholic Church, Ellison Road, Norbury SW16 5DE
and then South London Crematorium, Rowan Road, Streatham SW16 5JG

Eileen will be received into the church at 17:00 on Thursday 28 February 2019
and her Funeral Requiem Mass will be at 10:00 on Friday 1 March.

At 11:00 she will be taken to the South London Crematorium for cremation and then guests
are invited to join us at St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall in Ellison Road for refreshments.

Donations, if wished should be made to: SPUC (Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child)
or CAFOD (Catholic Fund for Overseas Development)
Both of these causes were very dear to Eileen’s heart.  Indeed for many years she has volunteered at SPUC in an admin capacity.
These can be made via the Funeral Director:
Alfred Smith, 15 Rowan Road, Streatham SW16 5JF

If you wish to send flowers, they have asked for them to arrive no later than 17:00 on 28 February.
We know though that Eileen’s preference would be donations.

Would you be able to help, regularly or occasionally.......?

Canon Francis Moran RIP

30/1/2019

It is with great sadness that we convey the news that Canon Francis Moran passed away yesterday, Tuesday 29 January, in the presbytery of St. Mary Magdalene Mortlake.

He was the curate here at St. Bartholomew’s from 1993-97.

Francis Moran was born in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales in 1961 as part of a large family. In 1989 after Seminary and getting his degree at the University of Kent at Canterbury he was ordained to the Priesthood at St Cecilia’s North Cheam and went on to be Assistant Priest at Ss. Henry & Elizabeth Sheerness and then here at St. Bartholomew’s Norbury before a short time as Administrator of St James the Great in Peckham Rye. He was then appointed Parish Priest at St Catherine’s Chessington during which time he studied for an MA in Contemporary Catholic Theology at Heythrop College.

In early 2004 the Archbishop moved him to St Andrew’s Thornton Heath before moving him again to
St. Mary Magdalene Mortlake in 2017.

We pray for the safe and happy repose of his soul.

May he rest in peace.

Friday evening Mass returns

24/1/2019

After a break of many years, the Friday 20:00 Mass has been reinstated at St. Bartholomew's.

During the stewardship of Father Carolin (1963-99) this became an important Mass for those who were generally unable to attend a weekday Mass due to work, family or other commitments. Hopefully it will once again become a fruitful element of our parish life.

Christmas: Father Deo writes.....

21/12/2018

'We are now just a few days away from Christmas.

Huge thanks go to the many people who have helped to decorate the church, the trees and the crib. The Carol Concert given by our Polyphony Choir and brass instruments last Sunday was a resounding success.

Everybody has practised their various roles and all is now ready for the Church to welcome Christ Jesus, our Lord and Saviour, as he enters into history in the humble stable at Bethlehem.

A very happy and blessed Christmas to you all.'

IMPORTANT MESSAGE REGARDING A RECENT SCAM EMAIL

14/12/2018

It has come to our attention that our email address book has been hacked into, as a result of which an email, purporting to be from St Bart’s, and claiming to contain a “secure message” was sent to an unknown number of people. If you have received such a communication, please do not open it. If you do open it, and you try to enter an email address and password, they will appear to be rejected, but in fact it will steal your password and mail out to your address book.

If this is the case with you, please change your password without delay. Please note that we shall never send out a “secure message” and you will never be asked to provide a password. Hopefully your security software should prevent you falling for this. Please note that this has had a knock-on effect on all our outgoing emails. If you are expecting a reply, but have not received one, please contact the parish office.

Christmas Concert of Carols and Readings

9/12/2018

Picture
Seen by many as the start of their Christmas, this lovely annual event will take place in the church at 14:30 on Sunday 16 December. The brass instruments from St. Bartholomew's Orchestra will be joining us for the occasion.

Programmes are available in advance from Choir members and in the Repository, and will also be available on the day at the door.

Entry is by Programme only for a modest £3, and this includes mulled wine and a mince pie in the hall afterwards.

As always, there will be a retiring collection in aid of the parish's St. Vincent de Paul Society.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society provides moral, material and physical assistance for the most needy in our local area, not only at Christmas time but also throughout the year.

Pastoral Letter from Archbishop Peter Smith

A letter from His Holiness Pope Francis.....

28/11/2018

..... to the People of God may be read here. It has been widely available elsewhere since is was published, but is of sufficient importance to bring to your attention should you not have already read it.

Many Congratulations.....

24/11/2018

..... to Father Michael Jones, Parish Priest here from 1993-2004, who celebrates the Ruby Anniversary of his Ordination on the great feast of Christ the King on Sunday 25 November.

Today there was a special Mass at his parish of St. John Vianney in Bexleyheath to mark the occasion. In a crowded church he spoke, amongst many other things, warmly of his time at St. Bart's and has lost none of his wonderful sense of humour! Among the many members of the clergy on the sanctuary (and in the pews beyond!) were Father Tom Scannell and Father John McGowan (who gave the homily).

Father Tom was a curate here from 1997 to 2000, and retired last month as Parish Priest of Our Lady of Loreto and St. Winefride's, Kew. Father John and his family were Norbury parishioners, and he is a member of the Carmelite Priory Community in Kensington. Also present was Deacon Paul Milligan.

2019 Diary Dates

9/11/2018

We shall be having a Parish Lenten Mission from 6 to 12 April 2019, given by the Redemptorist Fathers. Details will be given as soon as they are available. In the meantime, please do note in your diaries.

Following on from our successful and prayerful day earlier this year, we are delighted to announce that we shall be hosting another Day With Mary here on Saturday 16 November 2019.

Two wonderful whole-parish events at St. Bartholomew's.

Daily and Monthly Catholic Prayer Dedications

4/11/2018

As a further guide to prayer, we now have a Dedications page indicating the subjects that the Church suggests we focus on with our daily and monthly prayers. It is to be found under Thoughts and Prayers at the head of each page.

We acknowledge with gratitude the courtesy of Sam Guzman, The Catholic Gentleman, in permitting us to share them with you.
