St. John Henry Newman - 13 October 2019

4/10/2019

Update 12 October: The Canonisation Mass will take place at St. Peter's Basilica, Rome, from 08:30 (UK time), and the whole of the proceedings will be available to view live here.
Picture
On Sunday 13 October Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801-1890) will be canonised by Pope Francis in Rome and become the first Catholic English person to be canonised since the Forty Martyrs in 1970.

Cardinal Newman was Beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on 19 September 2010 whilst the Holy Father was visiting the United Kingdom, and his Canonisation was formally confirmed by Pope Francis on 12 February 2019.

In honour of the occasion the 11:30 Mass will be offered for 'St. John Henry Newman' and some of our Polyphony Choir will lead the singing of four wonderful Catholic hymns set to his words: Praise to the Holiest, Firmly I believe and truly, Help, Lord, the souls that Thou hast made and Lead Kindly Light.
Radio 4's Morning Worship will be broadcast from Birmingham Oratory, which Cardinal Newman founded - the organist for the occasion will be Daniel Battle, one time organist to our Polyphony Choir. The program will be aired at 08:10, and then available on the BBC Radio 4 Website for 'catch-up' shortly afterwards.

Polyphony Choir's 50th Birthday - Sunday 22 September

16/9/2019

Picture
At the 11:30 Mass on 22 September, we will be delighted to welcome Archbishop John Wilson to celebrate Mass on the occasion of the Polyphony Choir’s 50th Birthday. We also hope to welcome Father Michael Jones, Father Philip Glandfield and Father Paul Antwi-Bosiako, alongside Father Deo and Father Tomasz.

Anne Rowntree took the first rehearsal on 19 September 1969, forming the Choir at Father Carolin’s request. We’re delighted that Anne will be joining us for the occasion. Terry Jupp, present on that first evening, has given uninterrupted service to the Choir ever since, and we pay special tribute to her.
We hope as many of you as possible will join us for this very special Mass, marking this great milestone in our parish history.

There will be the opportunity to greet Archbishop John after Mass. The Choir’s celebration in the hall afterwards is for invited past and present Choir members only.

Examination Results

25/8/2019

Those who have taken GCSEs this year have now received their results under the new marking system. Congratulations to all those who have achieved the passes they hoped for. There will, of course, be those who have not gained the grades they were expecting, and who may be feeling some disappointment. It is important that they consult with staff at their schools in order to determine the way forward that might best suit them.

From 1999-2005, he was a lecturer in moral theology at St Cuthbert’s Seminary, Ushaw and served as Vice Rector. He was Episcopal Vicar for Evangelisation in Leeds between 2005 and 2012. From June 2012 to November 2014 he was Diocesan Administrator of the Diocese of Leeds. Then he was Parish Priest of St Martin de Porres, Wakefield. On 24th November 2015 he was appointed an Auxiliary Bishop in Westminster, and was ordained Bishop on 25th January 2016.
