Council 266, Streatham
The Order of the Knights of St. Columba ~ Council 266, Streatham, Province 12 ~ Southwark
The Order of the Knights of St. Columba is a fraternal organisation of Catholic men, dedicated to the work of the Lay Apostolate. The Order has been Blessed by the Holy Father and has the fullest approval of the Hierarchies of England, Scotland and Wales who jointly appoint the Orders Ecclesiastical adviser.
The Order was founded in 1919 in Scotland and shortly after extended to England, Wales and the Channel Islands.
The Order celebrated its Centenary in 2019 with the celebrations starting from Supreme Council in October 2018.
In May 2016 our Province 12 ~ Southwark celebrated our 90th Anniversary with a Mass at Our Lady of the Angels, Erith with Archbishop Peter Smith as the chief celebrant and afterwards a banquet at the Marriott Hotel, Bexley Heath.
Province 12 will be celebrating their Centenary in 2026 starting with a Mass on the 16 May 2026 at St. Georges Cathedral. There will also be other activities organised.
We are Council 266 Streatham, Province 12 ~ Southwark. Covering the Diocese of Southwark. Councils cover several parishes in their area. We cover five parishes, St. Bartholomew’s, St. Michael’s Pollard Hill, English Martyrs Streatham, St. Simon & St. Jude Streatham Hill and SS Peter & Paul, Mitcham.
We assist at St. George’s Cathedral by stewarding at big occasions such as the Chrism Mass. Also we carry out duties at Aylesford Priory stewarding at large Pilgrimages.
Our Council has been erecting the Christmas Crib on Streatham Common since 1956.
Brother John Taylor and Gordon Clark were there at the start and both are still there passing down the instruction of erecting it to new Brothers who will be carrying on this activity.
We distribute Easter and Christmas posters in our five parishes. When the Bishops visit parishes anywhere in the diocese we form a guard of honour for them.
As you know Bishop Philip Moger will be leaving us in Southwark because he was appointed to the diocese of Plymouth.
On the 21 September 2024 at Fr. Innocent’s Induction Mass in Bexleyheath Brother Melvin Carty presented Bishop Philip with his Member of Honour Certificate. We were waiting for a more suitable time and place but because of his move to Plymouth we had to rush to make the presentation before he left.
Council 266 Deceased Brothers and their families annual Mass will be on Sunday the 3 November 2024 at 17:00 at St. Bartholomew’s, Norbury. The 9 November 2024 is the feast day of our Patron Saint, St. Columba.
